The meteorite was partly unearthed under a sabkha lake, while other pieces were found embedded in the rock. In total, an estimated about 3 tons of material were found, spread over an area of about 40 kilometers. What makes this meteorite especially noteworthy is its age on Earth. Carbon dating indicates a terrestrial age of approximately 23,000 years. This designates Al Haggounia 001 as a "fossil" or "paleo" meteorite: an object that fell to Earth thousands of years ago and has since been exposed to wind, water and other weathering processes, visible in the reddish-brown, weathered crust. A unique addition to any meteorite or mineral collection: not only a piece from space, but also a piece of Earth’s history dating back thousands of years.
