ALEJANDRO OBREGON (COLOMBIA 1920-1992). "Les Palombes". Etching and aquatint printed in colours on BFK Rives, 1956, signed and numbered in pencil Obregon 10/120. I. 39.5 x 29.8 cm, S. 55.5 x 45 cm. With frame 63 x 50 cm. Obregon was an important Latin American painter-printmaker, who came from a family that owned a textile factory in Barranquilla, Colombia. He trained in Boston, Massachusetts, as well as Barcelona, before eventually becoming Director of the School of Fine Arts in Santafé de Bogotá, Colombia. Obregon worked in an abstract Surrealist style fairly common in Latin America during the mid-20th century, with his primary influences Pablo Picasso and the English abstract Surrealist artist Graham Sutherland. In 1954, Obregon completed one of his most significant works, a late Cubist style painting entitled "Velorio" that refers to an event called La Violencia, that happened on June 8 and 9 of 1954, in which thirteen university students were killed by army forces during a protest against the dictatorship of President Gustavo Rojas Pinilla at the National University, Colombia.
