In the form of a lively collection of table talk and trifles after the model of the ancient Attic Nights, the book reconstructs classical Greek and Roman culture in all its facets. The substantive core consists of in-depth explanations of ancient law and the state apparatus, complemented by detailed descriptions of everyday life, religion, military affairs and festivals of antiquity. A culturally fascinating peculiarity are the numerous reports of ghosts, omens and the supernatural, which Alessandri often depicts as a presumed eyewitness. Its outstanding historical significance is due to its role as a centuries-long standard reference work for understanding Roman law, as well as a key text of European humanism. The specific 1673 edition is regarded as a philological milestone, as it for the first time links the text with the unabridged, highly esteemed commentaries of leading scholars such as André Tiraqueau and Denis Godefroy, thereby uniting the entire legal and cultural-historical knowledge of the 16th and 17th centuries.
