Alexander John Drysdale American/Louisiana, 1870-1934 "Autumn Bayou" oil on canvas 1927, signed and dated lower left, handwritten label inscribed "Dr. Nelson" on reverse of frame, framed. Provenance: D.H. Holmes Department Store, New Orleans, LA.; Private Collection, LA; Neal Auction, Dec. 6, 1997, lot 791. Note: Alexander Drysdale's large canvases were most often commissions, as in the case of the Shushan Airport and the Weiss Dining Room murals. The monumental and exceedingly rare canvas offered here was part of a group of paintings commissioned by the D.H. Holmes department store. In 1927, the president of D.H. Holmes, Frederick W. Evans, asked Drysdale to paint twenty-two special canvases of mural size to display in the store. The paintings hung in the restaurant at the store for many years until Drysdale's death, when they were put on exhibition in the store's riverside window. Reference: Buechner, Howard A. Drysdale: Artist of Myth and Legend. Metairie, LA: Thunderbird Press, 1985.
