Alexander Rosemeier (1888-1992) - Ophaalbrug bij Noorden

Alexander Rosemeier (1888-1992) - Ophaalbrug bij Noorden

Alexander Coenraad (Alex) Rosemeier (Surakarta, 18 July 1888 – Leiden, 15 August 1992) was a Dutch painter. Beautiful light-toned work by Rosemeier; he was clearly inspired here by J. H. Weissenbruch. Biography Rosemeier moved with his father in 1900 from the Dutch East Indies to Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. His mother had died eight years earlier. After his father's death (ca. 1908) Rosemeier became a professional soldier. He was stationed at the Morschpoort Barracks in Leiden. In 1914 Rosemeier married Grietje Mast (1893-1969). In 1923 his contract with the army expired and he became an independent artist. His first exhibition was held in a hospital in Woerden. He supported himself and his family by holding various jobs in addition to his art. From the 1930s his works brought in enough income to live on full-time. Rosemeier is, together with painters such as Arend Jan van Driesten, Johannes Cornelis Roelandse and Chris van der Windt, regarded as part of the Leidse School, a movement affiliated with the Haagse School. He mainly painted Dutch landscapes and was strongly influenced by Impressionism. Besides landscapes he devoted himself to cityscapes, still lifes and portraits. He resided, among other places, on the island De Kaag. Rosemeier was especially fascinated by light effects. To mark his 85th birthday, in 1973 a large retrospective was organized at the Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden. At the age of 103 he opened his final exhibition, held in the town hall of Wassenaar. His last pupil was Leo van den Ende, the painter of the Van den Ende Panorama (252 m2), which he painted from 1997 to 2008 in Panorama TulipLand in Voorhout. The painting is carefully and professionally packaged.
