A unique and rare painting by the Russian artist Alexander Tyshler from 1960. The dimensions are 100 x 60 cm. It is an oil on canvas painting, signed and dated in the lower left corner. Provenance Bloomsbury Auctions, London, June 27, 2006, lot 126 Aleksandr Tyshler (26-07-1898 – 26-06-1980) was a Russian modernist painter, best known as a stage designer. Tyshler was born in 1898 in Melitopol, into a Jewish family. His father, Grigory Tyshler, was a carpenter. In 1912 Tyshler was admitted to the Kiev Art Academy, from which he graduated in 1917. Shortly thereafter the Russian Civil War broke out, and he could not return to Melitopol. Tyshler stayed in Kiev and began visiting Aleksandra Ekster’s studio, a place frequently attended by the city’s intellectual elite. In 1919 he joined the Red Army and in 1920 returned to Melitopol, where he married Anastasia Grozdova the same year. In 1921 Tyshler moved to Moscow. In Moscow Tyshler came into contact with avant-garde circles. He worked in painting and graphic design, especially as a book illustrator. During this period he was mainly interested in abstract compositions with details of mechanical equipment. His graphic work, by contrast, was mostly figurative and depicted themes related to the Civil War, as well as landscapes of the Crimea. From 1926, when Tyshler was invited to design a set for a play at BelGOSET, the Jewish State Theater in Minsk, he began to work as a stage designer as well. His second set design was for Fuenteovejuna by Lope de Vega. He was subsequently invited to work for the Jewish State Theater in Kharkiv and, in the 1930s, for the Romen Theater in Moscow. Tyshler worked for the Romen Theater until 1940 and designed the scenery for most productions during that period. In the 1930s he also produced many paintings on subjects related to the Russian Revolution and Civil War, as well as themes from his stage designs, such as a large cycle on the life of the Roma. Tyshler’s paintings from before 1936 are considered the early period of his art. Aleksander Tyshler was one of the most original masters of Soviet art. In the mid-1920s he developed his own recognizable style, based on lyrical expression and surreal grotesque; this style remained unchanged until the end of his life. Tyshler repeatedly varied the same fantastic, phantasmagoric imagery, traditional theater figures, masks, and fairy-tale characters. His works were rich in allegories, poetic metaphors, and mystical symbolism. It is very difficult to attribute Aleksander Tyshler to a specific art movement of the 20th century. He was one of the few artists who did not align with Socialist Realism. From the 1930s, when Tyshler still worked in the theater, he began to exhibit his paintings only after the thaw. This earned him enormous prestige among younger artists. Tyshler had a major influence on the development of independent art in the 1960s and 1970s. Works by Aleksander Tyshler are in many private and museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.
