AMADIS OF GAUL. The Treasury of the Twelve Books of Amadis of Gaul, Namely the Sermons, Ballads, Epistles, Lamentations, and Other Works Most Excellent and Worthy of the French Reader. Paris: For Jean Longis and Robert Le Mangnier, 1559. In-8, havana morocco leather, double border with floral motifs at the corners formed by black fillets set with gold, a cartouche with interlaced motifs in the same style at the center, spine decorated in the same style, interior lace, gilt edges (Capé). First edition of this anthology drawn from the first twelve books of *Amadis of Gaul*, intended to provide every man of wit “the means and grace to discourse, speak, and write on all matters that may present themselves before his eyes.” A fine copy in a very attractive Capé binding with mosaic decoration in the Renaissance style. From the libraries of Hector de Backer (I, 1926, no. 108) and Raoul-Édouard Cartier. Former handwritten bookplate washed off the title page.
