Amida Buddha - butsudan - Wood, Gilt, Lacquer - Japan - Meiji period

Japan’s travel altar (zushi / butsudan) with Amida Buddha, Meiji period. A special Japanese travel altar (butsudan / zushi) made of wood with a black lacquer exterior and a richly gilded interior. The cabinet served as a portable household altar for personal devotion and prayer. Inside is a statue of Amida Buddha. Amida (Amitābha) is one of the most important Buddhas within Japanese Pure Land Buddhism (Jōdo) and symbolizes compassion and the vow of rebirth in the Pure Land. The contrast between the black lacquer on the outside and the gold-colored interior gives the altar a warm and spiritual appearance, while the Amida image endows the whole with strong religious meaning. Period: Meiji. Dimensions: H31 x W11 x D7.5 cm Material: wood, lacquer, gilded. Condition: Reasonable condition with signs of use and aging appropriate to the age. Shipping: The lot will be carefully packaged and insured for shipment.
