Amleto Costa Dalla (1929-2024) - Art 13'82 Basel

This colorful screen print by Adalla Costa, made for Art 13’82 Basel, shows an elegant woman looking at herself in a round mirror as she seems to be putting on an earring. Her striking red-and-green hat forms, together with the pink rose, a strong contrast with the vertical stripes in various shades of green in the background. The composition is built from bright, flat color fields and clean outlines, giving the work a graphic and stylized appearance. The mirror forms the central element and immediately draws the eye to the woman's face, while the graceful mirror stand and the flower contribute to a decorative character. The interplay of fashion, beauty and reflection gives the screen print an elegant atmosphere that strongly recalls the visual language of posters and fashion illustrations. Amleto Dalla Costa (Milan, 1929–2024) was a versatile Italian artist, illustrator, designer and photographer. He began at a young age as a draftsman at the animation studio ARS Film of Nino and Toni Pagot and later worked in graphic design, advertising and fashion photography. From the 1970s onward he increasingly devoted himself to his autonomous art and became especially known for paintings and screen prints of elegant, strongly stylized female figures. His visual language is characterized by flowing contours, large flat color fields, and a thorough simplification of form and detail, while his background as a graphic designer remains clearly recognizable. Women and the female portrait form an important recurring theme in his œuvre. Dalla Costa exhibited internationally throughout his long career and worked with diverse techniques, from painting and screen printing to sculpture and photography.
