Penca de Balangandã – Traditional Brazilian metal amulet, 19th–20th century Important Penca de Balangandã, a traditional Afro-Brazilian amulet of Bahian origin, linked to the culture of Afro-descendant women in colonial and post-colonial Brazil, particularly the so-called Baianas. The penca consists of a main arched structure, richly decorated with vegetal and symbolic motifs, from which hang numerous movable elements (balangandãs): amulets, stylized fruits, bells and votive shapes, each with protective, auspicious or religious meaning. The movement of the pendants produces a slight sound, hence the name balangandã. These objects were worn at the waist or pinned to clothing and served an apotropaic function, in addition to representing social status, cultural identity and religious devotion, often linked to Candomblé and Afro-Catholic syncretism.
