An impressive oval carnelian intaglio brooch depicting Ganymede and the eagle of Zeus, Ganymede is shown seated upon a rock, wearing a Phrygian cap and a loosely draped garment, offering a shallow bowl to the eagle of Zeus, the bird bends forward to drink, its wings partly extended and one claw raised to clasp the vessel, beneath which small drops of liquid are indicated, a column with a moulded base rises behind the eagle, while suspended curtains frame the scene above and at the sides, a patterned architectural register beneath the figures completes the composition, possibly a Poniatowski gem, the intaglio probably Italian, late 18th or early 19th century, in a 19th-century silver-gilt brooch mount with a 9-carat gold pin, the gem measures 3.1 x 2.4 cm, 15 grams, presented within a antique burgundy cloth jeweller’s case
