All auctions / Silver & Gold / An unusual William IV Toast Rack made in London in 1836 by Charles Fox II

The Toast Rack stands on four unusual cast foliate pierced feet, with matted surface. The six unusual reeded Gothic arched divisions stand on a shaped platform decorated with leaves. The central pierced carrying handle is decorated with leaf capping and displays a vacant heart shaped cartouche below. The toast rack also, unusually, has a central leg to keep the main body steady on the table. This piece is in excellent condition and is very well marked. It has a very good weight. Charles Fox II entered his first mark in February 1822 with workshops at 139, Old Street, London. A.G. Grimwade in "London Goldsmiths 1697-1837 - Their Marks and Lives", emphasises that "Charles Fox's work shows consistently high quality. The entry of a large number of maker's marks suggests a fairly large establishment with varying marks used for different categories of work. Fox was perhaps the last individualist silversmith before the debacle of Victorian mass production". Length: 6.65 inches, 16.63 cm. Width: 4.5 inches, 11.25 cm. Height: 5.5 inches, 13.75 cm. Weight: 14 oz in Weight.
