Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua, Casas Grandes. A polychrome pottery human effigy jar with a globular body and a modeled head rising from the rim. The face has narrow eyes in relief, a projecting nose, a small slit mouth, and ears, with red stepped panels outlined in black on each cheeks. A dotted band crosses the brow, a red and black zigzag runs over the crown, and fine black lines behind the ears. A second dotted band encircles the neck. The body is painted with interlocking red and black stepped and hooked motifs over a cream slip, suggesting a patterned garment. What these human effigy jars meant is still debated. Many have come from burials under room floors, which points to a ritual or commemorative role. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205602
