Ancient Chinese Bronze - Large mirror with relief...

TANG DYNASTY CHINESE BRONZE MIRROR Silver-plated bronze mirror. The back is cast in high relief at the center with a dome-shaped loop, the center decorated with a frieze of mythical animals. The mirror is round, with a hemispherical knob. It is made of silver-plated bronze. The body is decorated with fine motifs and circles, dividing it into two zones, inner and outer. The inner zone is adorned with auspicious mythical animals (chilongs), walking, leaping and running around the knob. The outer zone is decorated with chilongs, flowers and plants in a complex and scattered pattern. Mirrors adorned with motifs of auspicious animals were popular at the beginning of the Tang dynasty. Their style departed from the rigidity of the Han dynasty and was created in a fluid and magnificent way. The auspicious animal mirror is an important type of mirror in the development of bronze mirrors under the Tang dynasty. The bronze has a brown-silver patina.
