Ancient Egypt, Late Period Faience Blue faience amulet of Taweret - 3.5 cm

The amulet depicts the goddess Taweret. She is standing upright with her left foot forward. She has a hippopotamus body and head, a crocodile back and tail and human female arms and breasts. Her mouth is open to show her teeth. The amulet has a small base and a loop on the back. She is represented as a pregnant hippopotamus, as Taweret’s particular responsibility was the protection of women during pregnancy and childbirth. Dimensions: 3,5 cm Condition: The amulet appears to be in good condition. The upper layer of blue faience on the left side of her face and left shoulder is gone, revealing the white core material. Provenance: Dutch collection. Bought at a German auction house, with German export license. Ex private German collection since 2012 in Starnberg. Before that from a German collector since 1905.
