Background Information: This Gallo-Roman coarse ware pottery vessel features a broad, rounded body, pronounced shoulders, a short neck with a thickened, slightly everted rim and a distinctive pedestal-style foot. Its dark grey to black surface, contrasting with lighter grey areas, gives the vessel a characteristic appearance associated with the practical ceramic traditions of Roman Gaul. During the Roman Imperial Period, coarse ware pottery formed an essential part of everyday domestic life. These vessels were produced for practical purposes, including the storage, preparation and serving of food and liquids. Unlike fine tablewares intended for more formal dining, coarse ware ceramics were valued for their durability, versatility and suitability for regular household use. Pottery production in Roman Gaul was organised around regional workshops, where skilled potters manufactured vessels using locally available clay and established forming and firing techniques. Variations in firing conditions, particularly the amount of oxygen present in the kiln, could produce grey and black ceramic surfaces. Roman roads and river networks supported the distribution of pottery throughout the provinces, including regions corresponding to present-day France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The vessel's carefully shaped profile and distinctive raised foot demonstrate the practical craftsmanship of Gallo-Roman ceramic production. It provides a direct and tangible connection to everyday life in the Roman provinces, where pottery vessels of this kind were familiar and indispensable household objects.
