Ancient Roman

Roman bronze surgical instrument handle with geometric decoration – 1st–3rd centuries AD. Culture attributed: Roman Empire Chronology: 1st–3rd centuries AD Material: Bronze Typology: Surgical instrument handle Roman bronze surgical tool handle, crafted in bronze and characterized by its elegant elongated design and the extraordinary ornamental richness of its central body. The piece features a narrow and pointed end intended to trace characters on wax-coated tablets, while the opposite end, with a flattened termination, allowed smoothing the surface and correcting inscriptions. Notably, the elaborate decoration of the handle stands out, divided into different registers by raised annular moldings. Its surface is embellished with fine incised geometric motifs, bands of diagonal lines crosshatching, and small angular elements of notable precision. The piece preserves an attractive patina of dark green, brown, and golden-bronze tones, with surface wear that enhances its ornamentation.
