Roman Glass – One-Handled Bottle / Jug with Applied Glass Trails – c. 3rd–4th Century AD Ancient Roman glass vessel in the form of a slender one-handled bottle or jug, probably dating to the 3rd–4th century AD. The vessel is made of pale greenish transparent glass and has a tall, almost cylindrical body with rounded shoulders, a narrow neck and a characteristic funnel-shaped flaring rim. A particularly attractive feature is the decoration around the neck, consisting of several applied glass trails. The slender loop handle was separately applied, connecting the neck to the shoulder. The lower attachment of the handle has a distinct moulded decorative termination. The glass contains numerous small air bubbles and displays extensive age-related surface alteration. Large areas are covered with whitish-beige mineral deposits and areas of iridescent weathering, which have intentionally been left untouched. The base shows a clearly visible pontil mark, resulting from the traditional free-blown glassmaking process. Considering its age, the vessel is remarkably complete. The rim and handle are preserved. Age-related weathering, mineral deposits, surface wear and irregularities are present and clearly documented in the photographs. Culture: Roman Dating: c. 3rd–4th century AD Object: One-handled bottle / jug Material: Glass Technique: Free-blown glass with applied handle and glass trails Height: approx. 24 cm Rim diameter: approx. 5 cm Weight: approx. 480 g Provenance: Private collection, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany The photographs form an integral part of the condition description. The object will be carefully and securely packed for shipment and sent with tracking.
