A piece of the past, created to be carried Roman Imperial Period Bird-Motif Sigillum – Venus’s Dove Symbolism and the Tradition of Personal Seals Culture: Ancient Rome Period: Roman Imperial Period Date: ca. 1st–3rd century AD Object Type: Bird-motif stamp seal Material: Metal alloy Form: Circular sealing face; short raised handle and rear attachment loop Technique: Shaped metal body; stylised bird motif within a bordered sealing face Symbolism: Sigillum — personal seal; a symbolic interpretation connecting the bird motif with Venus’s dove tradition Condition: Sealing face and principal outlines of the bird motif preserved; brown patina, scattered green deposits and an opening in the attachment loop Height: 13.96 mm ± Width: 13.79 mm ± Weight: 5.04 g ± Description This bird-motif metal alloy seal, assessed within the Roman Imperial period, possesses a distinctive visual character despite its small dimensions. A border surrounds the circular sealing face, emphasising the stylised bird at its centre. The short, raised rear handle and attachment loop facilitate handling and carrying. Brown patina and scattered green surface deposits lend character to the piece, while the principal outlines of the bird remain legible. Personal seals, known in Latin as sigilla, were used in the Roman world to mark documents, correspondence and items associated with ownership. An impression in wax or clay could serve as a visual identifier of its owner. Birds also appear among the established motifs of Roman seal engraving, combining personal preference with cultural and religious associations. The bird motif is presented here through a symbolic connection with the dove, sacred to Venus. In Virgil’s Aeneid, two doves guide Venus’s son Aeneas to the golden bough, linking the birds with divine assistance and guidance alongside their association with the goddess of love. Although the stylised rendering limits precise identification of the species, this mythological connection adds meaningful cultural depth to the piece’s presentation. Note Warm lighting inspired by museum illumination was used to naturally highlight the object’s surface, form, craftsmanship and historical appearance. Suspension cords and other display accessories visible in the photographs serve as presentation aids and are not included in the sale. ★ Please refer to the stated measurements when assessing the actual size.
