Ancient Roman

A rare and attractive Roman bronze child's ring featuring an oval bezel with the worn remains of a possible lion-head motif. Although centuries of burial have softened the original details, the surviving relief suggests the stylized face of a lion, an enduring symbol of courage, strength, and divine protection throughout the Roman world. Rings of this small size were commonly worn by children or adolescents and often served not only as personal ornaments but also as protective amulets. In Roman culture, the lion was closely associated with power, guardianship, and heroism, making it a fitting decorative motif for jewellery intended to safeguard its wearer. The ring has developed a beautiful archaeological green and brown patina with mineral encrustations that testify to its long burial. Despite the worn bezel, the ring retains its original form and possesses considerable historical charm. Condition: Good archaeological condition with an attractive natural patina and stable mineral deposits. The bezel decoration is heavily worn but appears to preserve a possible lion-head design. Surface wear and corrosion are consistent with its age. Provenance: Acquired from a European private collection; formerly part of an old collection assembled before 2000. A charming and wearable Roman child's ring with a possible protective lion motif, offering an evocative glimpse into the jewellery and symbolism of everyday life in the Roman Empire.
