Ancient Roman

Bronze plaque with an anthropomorphic mask – Imperial Roman art Culture: Roman. Period of reference: Roman Empire, 1st–3rd centuries A.D. Material: Cast bronze. Measurements: 76 × 31 × 11 mm. Description for auction: Interesting figurative bronze piece with a depiction of an expressive anthropomorphic mask, characterized by its pronounced sculptural relief and facial features of strong visual impact. The composition presents a face with exaggerated features, with eyes completely pierced, a prominent nose, thick lips, and deep grooves that emphasize its expression. The forehead is traversed by curved relief lines, while a vertical extension rises from the top of the head. Specially noteworthy is the treatment of the mask, reminiscent of the grotesque language of theatrical representations spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. These images occupied a prominent place in Roman decorative arts, especially in small bronze objects, ornamental plaques, and furniture elements. The surface retains an intense dark green patina, with earthy deposits and ochre tones that enhance the volumes and details of the modeling. Conservation status: Good overall presence, with surface wear, adhered deposits, and facial reliefs well defined. It preserves its characteristic upper extension and the lateral protrusion.
