Ancient Roman

The Emperors’ Generosity — Philip II Roman Coin Pendant A father and son, two emperors and one message: generosity. The reverse of this Roman sestertius, issued in the name of Philip II, depicts Philip I and his son Philip II seated side by side. The surrounding inscription, LIBERALITAS AVGG III, celebrates imperial generosity and distributions to the people. In the Roman world, public gifts were a powerful expression of the ruler’s support. This coin reflects the emperors’ ambition to be remembered as sovereigns who shared their wealth with their people. The obverse features the laureate, draped and cuirassed portrait of Philip II. The portrait, surrounding lettering and depiction of the two emperors give the piece a striking historical character. Fitted with a ring through its existing hole and a black cord, the coin has been transformed into a pendant, bringing Rome’s ideal of imperial generosity into a wearable piece of history. Period: Roman Imperial Period — AD 247–249. Diameter: 27.4 mm. Weight: 16.1 g. Condition: Surface wear and irregular edges are present. The auction record describes the coin as repatinated. The hole is also visible in the earlier auction photograph. Please refer to the photographs for details.
