Background Information: This bronze pendant is cast in the distinctive form of a Roman gladius, the iconic short sword of the Roman legionary during the Early Imperial period. The miniature faithfully reproduces the characteristic rounded pommel, short grip, guard, and tapering blade of the weapon. A circular perforation through the blade served as the suspension point, allowing the pendant to be worn on a cord or attached to clothing. Miniature weapon pendants were popular throughout the Roman Empire as symbolic objects rather than functional weapons. They are generally interpreted as personal amulets associated with military identity, courage, victory, and protection. Such pendants may have been worn by serving soldiers, veterans, family members, or civilians who admired the prestige and power of the Roman army. They also reflect the widespread Roman belief in apotropaic objects capable of protecting the wearer from harm. The gladius was the principal sidearm of the Roman legion between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and became one of the most recognisable symbols of Roman military power. Miniature representations of this weapon have been recovered from military forts, civilian settlements, and frontier regions throughout the Empire, demonstrating the close relationship between military life and personal adornment. Cast in bronze using established Roman metalworking techniques, pendants of this type were produced within an organised craft tradition and circulated widely through the Empire's extensive military and commercial networks. They illustrate how military symbolism extended beyond the battlefield into everyday life. Dating to the 1st–2nd century AD, this pendant provides a direct and tangible connection to the Roman world, where objects of this kind combined personal identity, symbolic protection, and the enduring prestige of the Roman legion."
