Background Information: This cast bronze finger ring features an elongated oval bezel decorated with seven carefully engraved ring-and-dot motifs arranged in a symmetrical composition. The ring-and-dot pattern was one of the most enduring decorative elements in Roman art and metalwork, appearing on jewellery, military fittings, horse harnesses, belt mounts, and domestic objects throughout the Empire. Bronze finger rings of this type were widely worn by men and women as everyday personal ornaments. While some Roman rings carried engraved intaglios or inscriptions, others relied on geometric ornament to create an attractive and balanced design. The repeated circular motifs on this example demonstrate the Roman appreciation for symmetry and simple decorative forms that could be produced with remarkable precision. The ring was manufactured by skilled bronze workers using established casting techniques, after which the bezel was engraved by hand with the distinctive ring-and-dot decoration. Similar rings have been recovered from settlements, military forts, villas, and urban centres across the Roman Empire. Such jewellery was traded across large distances, reaching regions such as present-day Germany, France, Britain, and the Netherlands."
