Gravure : The presence of an inscription is notable: one reads « ΒΥΖΑM » (Byzam). This refers to Byzas, the mythical founder of Byzantium (future Constantinople, today Istanbul). • In legend, Byzas was a Greek hero (son of Poseidon or Keroessa) who would have founded the city around the 7th century BCE. • The intaglios with inscriptions of the type « ΒΥΖΑΜ » are thus supposed to represent Byzas himself, often armed and bearded, as a leader or founding hero. • Dating: This intaglio is very interesting. It could date from the Greco-Roman period (1st century BCE – 2nd century CE) and has a link to the city of Byzantium.
