All auctions / Asian Art / Ancient Roman Empire Blue Glass Flask with Iridescence

Roman, Imperial period, probably Roman Judaea. A free-blown glass flask with a squat, globular body and a tall cylindrical neck that widens slightly toward a broad, flaring mouth. The glass is a soft blue-green, and burial weathering has left creamy white patches across its surface. Along the rim and inside the mouth, an iridescent film shimmers in shades of sapphire and violet. Small flasks of this type were made in large numbers by glassblowers in the eastern provinces. They probably held perfumed oils, cosmetics, or other precious liquids, and many were later buried with their owners as grave goods. Item # 205284
