Ancient Roman, Empire Bone Ancient Roman Bone Dice – Fascinating Set of 3

Ancient Roman Bone Dice – Fascinating Set of 3 Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–4th Century AD Pieces 2.0-2.7g and 14.7-16.1mm. From a Private European Collection. A fascinating and highly evocative set of 3 Ancient Roman dice, finely carved from bone, each retaining the characteristic deeply incised ring-and-dot numerals so closely associated with Roman gaming pieces. The 3 dice show charming individual variations in the arrangement and execution of their numerals. Their slightly irregular shapes, warm natural bone surfaces and traces of ancient wear give each piece a remarkable character – objects that were made not merely to be admired, but to be held, thrown and played with almost two thousand years ago. Games of chance in Ancient Rome: Gaming was deeply embedded in Roman everyday life. Dice – tesserae in their familiar six-sided form – were used by people from different levels of Roman society, from soldiers and ordinary citizens to members of the Roman elite. Roman literary sources even associate Emperor Augustus with a fondness for dice. Suetonius preserves a letter in which Augustus himself describes playing during the Saturnalia and recording his winnings and losses. Gambling for money was generally subject to legal restrictions, but games of chance nevertheless remained enormously popular. During the festival of Saturnalia, when many of Rome's normal social conventions were temporarily relaxed, gambling became particularly associated with the celebrations. One can easily imagine objects such as these passing between players in a Roman tavern, military camp or private household – the small cubes rattling across a table while money, entertainment and perhaps considerable pride depended upon the result of a throw. Archaeological finds demonstrate just how widespread gaming was throughout the Roman world. Dice and other gaming pieces have been recovered from domestic contexts, settlements and military sites, providing an unusually personal glimpse into how Romans occupied their leisure time. When everything depended upon the throw: For the Romans, chance could carry significance beyond simple entertainment. The Latin expression alea iacta est – “the die is cast” has become one of antiquity's most enduring expressions for the moment when a decision can no longer be reversed. Whether these particular dice once belonged to a soldier, merchant or ordinary citizen can no longer be known. Yet this uncertainty is part of their fascination. They are small objects with a remarkably human story: 3 ancient witnesses to games won and lost, moments of excitement and disappointment, and the fascination with chance that connects the Roman world directly with our own. A highly attractive and characterful group of 3 genuine ancient gaming pieces, particularly appealing as a complete set.
