Roman Marble Phallus – Apotropaic or Votive Roman Imperial Period, 1st–2nd century AD A striking Roman phallic amulet or votive object made from fine-crystalline white marble, worked in a compact, almost sculptural form. The phallus was among the best-known and most powerful protective symbols of the Roman world and appears in a wide range of sizes and materials—from small personal amulets to three-dimensional works of art. The present specimen possesses a remarkably restrained and powerful form. A anatomically detailed rendering was deliberately avoided; the characteristic silhouette suffices to make the motif immediately recognizable. The all-round finishing and the weight of the marble give the small object a monumentally direct effect. In Roman imaginative world, the phallus was by no means merely an erotic motif. As Fascinum it possessed primarily an apotropaic, i.e., protective, meaning. Phallic representations were intended in particular to ward off the “evil eye” and could also be associated with fertility, vitality, good fortune, and prosperity. The apotropaic significance of phallic amulets and depictions is well attested in Roman culture. Due to its size of a little over 9 cm, this is not one of the small portable phallic amulets. Rather, the piece likely served as an independent apotropaic object or votive. Comparable phallic symbols could be used in domestic and cultic settings. An unusual and at the same time highly characteristic testimony of Roman everyday religion and ancient protective beliefs. Material: fine-crystalline white marble Dimensions: 92 × 50 × 44 mm Condition: lightly chipped, otherwise intact Dating: Roman Imperial Period, 1st–2nd century AD Provenance: Acquired 2026 in the German art trade, previously since before 2000 in private collection H. L., Rhineland. The invoice is available and will be provided to the purchaser as a copy.
