Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid. Roman bronze disc fibula / brooch, decorated with alternating panels of blue and white enamel arranged in a radial pattern. A prominent rounded boss occupies the centre, surrounded by concentric moulded borders. The projecting elements on either side formed part of the original fastening mechanism. -> Enamelled disc fibulae were especially popular in the Roman provinces during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. They combined the practical function of fastening clothing with colourful geometric decoration. Size: ± 28.2 x 20.6 mm Condition Good condition. Green-brown patina with earthen deposits. Most of the original blue and white enamel remains, with age-related cracks and losses. The original pin is missing. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use. Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher. -> Roman craftsmen commonly used the champlevé technique for brooches of this type. Recessed cells were created in the bronze surface and filled with coloured glass enamel, producing a durable contrast between the metal and the vivid blue and white decoration.
