Background Information: Lead weights were widely used throughout the Roman Empire during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, particularly in commercial activities, workshops and domestic settings. This example features a rounded, approximately conical body with an integral suspension loop, allowing it to be attached to a cord or suspended from a weighing or measuring device. Such weights could serve various practical purposes, including use with weighing equipment, as counterweights or as tensioning devices. The suspension loop suggests that this example was intended for hanging rather than functioning as a freestanding weight. Its precise original application cannot be established without further archaeological context. During the Early Roman Imperial period, particularly under the Flavian, Trajanic and Hadrianic emperors, commerce and economic activity expanded throughout the provinces. Accurate weighing and measuring were important in markets, military supply systems and workshops, where goods and materials were regularly exchanged. Lead was particularly suitable for manufacturing weights because of its high density, relatively low melting point and ease of casting. Roman craftsmen produced lead objects in a variety of standardised and practical forms, reflecting an established tradition of metalworking. Similar suspended weights are known from Roman archaeological contexts across Europe, including present-day Italy, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Objects of this kind illustrate the practical organisation of Roman economic and everyday life. This lead weight forms a tangible connection to the ancient Roman world, where simple but effective measuring and suspension devices played an important role in commerce, craftsmanship and daily activities.
