Life cycle of a Horse Bot Fly. Eggs Stomach with larvae Free larvae Pupa Adult insect These kinds of objects were used at universities, agricultural schools and veterinary institutes around the world. The Horse Bot Fly used to be a major problem in agriculture. The larvae live in the stomach of a horse (as can be seen in the specimen), and could cause severe inflammation or colic. Because horses at the time were the main draft power in agriculture and transportation, it was crucial for farmers and veterinarians to flawlessly recognize the life cycle of this insect in order to prevent infestation. Now this is a beautiful collectible piece, which despite its age is still in perfect condition. It will of course be carefully packed and shipped.
