Splendid and important work from the first half of the eighteenth century, a milestone of radical Enlightenment. Written in a partially anonymous form by the philosopher and scientist André-François Boureau-Deslandes (listed on the title page as “Par MR. D**”), the work offers a critical, secular, and sociological rereading of the evolution of human thought and its “revolutions.” A rare and sought-after original edition in three volumes, printed in London by the renowned publisher Jean Nourse in 1742. Condition – Exterior State (Binding) Generally excellent/very good, considering the era (over 280 years old). Contemporary (18th century) full leather binding (pearlized calf) with five raised bands, richly decorated with refined gilded ornaments and floral motifs impressed in blind in the compartments. Original burgundy leather tabs well preserved for both the titles (“HISTOIR DE LA PHILOSO”) and the volume numbers (“TOM. I”, “TOM. 2”, “TOM. 3”). Hinging, corners, and boards solid and well affixed. Minimal and physiological signs of age at the corners that do not impair aesthetics. Interior State (Pages and Leaves) Excellent condition, the papers are fresh, sturdy, and well bound. Frontispieces elegantly printed in two-color type (red and black), enriched with splendid vignettes and woodcut editorial marks. Edges and inner flyleaves hand-marbled (papier marbré technique) in vivid colors (red, blue, yellow, green). Text enriched with woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Ancient ownership marks (Ex Libris) elegantly penned in ink on the frontispieces, lending historical charm and authenticity to the copy without compromising legibility.
