André Jallot (1884-1936) - L'enceinte de l'alhambra (Grenade 1910)

Pierre Jean Baptiste Louis Dumont, also known by the pseudonym André Jallot, born March 29, 1884 in Paris and died in the same city on April 8, 1936, is a French painter, linked to the École de Rouen and the École de Paris. Pierre Dumont, born in 1884 in Rouen, is a French painter of the École de Rouen, recognized for his commitment to light and color. He grows up in a family of artists. His father, also a painter, encourages him from a young age to draw and paint. After studies at the Rouen Fine Arts School, Pierre Dumont leans toward Impressionist currents, in particular the École de Rouen, which stands out for its sensitive approach to the Normandy landscape. At the beginning of his career, he exhibits at the Salon des artistes français and participates in numerous group exhibitions, notably in Parisian salons. His career takes a turn in 1920 when he settles in Paris, where he begins to experiment with new techniques. Dumont's style is characterized by a bold use of color and a constant search for light. Inspired by Impressionism, he adopts loose and dynamic brushwork techniques, capturing the variations of light on his subjects. His palette is often luminous, oscillating between radiant hues and subtler tones, allowing him to create vibrant atmospheres in his works. Dumont tackles varied themes, but he focuses mainly on landscapes, scenes of daily life, and portraits. He particularly enjoys depicting Norman landscapes, beaches, flower fields, and seascapes, where he manages to convey deep emotion and a peaceful atmosphere. His interest in light is reflected in depictions of fleeting moments, such as reflections on water or shadows cast by sunlight. Beyond landscapes, he also explores intimate and familial subjects, painting scenes of daily life that reflect the simplicity and beauty of everyday life. His work testifies to a great sensitivity to the nuances of life and to human interactions. Dumont made his debut exhibiting in 1906 at the Legrip gallery in Rouen, where he presented works typical of the École de Rouen, notably landscapes and scenes of rural life. In 1907, after being disappointed by the conventional spirit of the Salon des artistes rouennais, he co-founded the Groupe des XXX, which grouped independent artists such as Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Raoul Dufy. This group later evolved into the Société normande de peinture moderne. From 1909, the painter became interested in the Rouen Cathedral, incorporating Fauvist elements into his painting. In 1912, he created the ephemeral La Section d'or magazine, which received contributions from figures like Guillaume Apollinaire and promoted rapprochement with the Parisian group of the same name. Initially influenced by Impressionism and Fauism, he later moved toward Cubist approaches following exchanges with Jacques Villon and other avant-garde artists. Dimensions: With frame: 72 x 94 cm.
