André Mary; Hermann-Paul - The Doctrinal of the Brave The French medieval heroes described in large wood engravings by Hermann Paul Mary, André. The Doctrinal of the Brave. Paris, Léon Pichon, 1919. Folio (340 x 240 mm). [28] p. With 20 large wood portraits engraved by Hermann Paul. White jacket with a flap, printed in red and black. Printed in 336 copies, one of 300 (No. 48) on laid vellum from Papeterie de Rives. André Mary (1879-1962) was a poet and specialist in French medieval literature. Inspired by his homeland, Burgundy, much of his work drew on the medieval era, which is also the case in this work, where the medieval heroes are depicted by Hermann Paul and described in a short poem by Mary. Hermann Paul (1864-1940) was a French caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in many techniques, but after World War I mainly in wood engraving. His inspirations became in that period more literary than journalistic. His style evolved from a Belle Époque line toward a modernist simplification.
