Ankerglas Bernsdorf - Hans Popella - Vase - ART DECO...

Ankerglas Bernsdorf – “Evelyn” Art Deco Flower Vase with Original Glass Insert – Amber Pressed Glass – Germany, 1930s No Reserve Price An exceptional and highly decorative Art Deco flower vase in rich honey-amber glass, produced by the renowned German glass manufacturer Ankerglas Bernsdorf during the 1930s. This striking model, named “Evelyn”, is documented in the original Ankerglas catalogue of 1937/1938 as model No. 732, accompanied by its matching glass insert, model No. 733. The vase features a bold, architectural design characteristic of the Art Deco period. Its substantial square base supports an elegantly tapered body with pronounced vertical ribs, culminating in a generously flared circular opening. A beautifully executed band of geometric, star-like motifs encircles the upper section, creating a fascinating interplay of symmetry, sculptural form and decorative detail. The glass has a magnificent, saturated honey-amber colour, ranging from warm golden yellow to deeper cognac tones. Particularly captivating in natural sunlight, the vase comes alive as light passes through its faceted surfaces, producing beautiful reflections, luminous highlights and subtle variations of colour. A particularly desirable feature is the original matching glass insert, designed to fit inside the vase. With its central opening and eight smaller holes, this removable insert allows flowers to be arranged individually, creating elegant and structured floral compositions. The survival of both original components makes this example especially appealing to collectors of Art Deco glass. The design reflects the confident geometric language of German decorative arts in the 1930s, with an architectural elegance reminiscent of the work associated with designers such as Hans Popella, who contributed to Ankerglas production during this period. Although the individual designer of the Evelyn model has not been conclusively identified, its sophisticated proportions and carefully balanced decoration demonstrate the artistic ambitions of the manufacturer. With its striking silhouette and radiant amber colour, this vase would be equally beautiful displayed on its own as a sculptural decorative object or filled with a carefully arranged bouquet. It would be particularly well suited to a contemporary, minimalist or Mid-Century Modern interior, where its warm colour and distinctive Art Deco geometry could create a beautiful focal point. Historical Background Ankerglas Bernsdorf, officially known as Aktiengesellschaft für Glasfabrikation, vormals Gebrüder Hoffmann, was an important German glass manufacturer based in Bernsdorf, Saxony. The company developed a diverse range of decorative and functional glassware, becoming particularly recognised for its sophisticated pressed-glass production. During the interwar years, its collections reflected the evolution of European design from traditional decorative forms towards the stronger geometric aesthetics of Art Deco. By the 1930s, Ankerglas had established a distinctive artistic identity through its combination of innovative glass-moulding techniques, architectural forms and richly coloured glass. Its 1937/1938 catalogue provides valuable historical documentation of this creative period, including the Evelyn vase and its original glass insert. Today, such documented pieces offer a fascinating insight into German Art Deco glassmaking and remain attractive to collectors and admirers of twentieth-century decorative arts.
