[ANONYME] Placide to Maclovie, on scruples Paris, at J. A. Durand Dufrenoy, Bookseller It is a treatise on piety and matters of conscience in epistolary or dialogic form between "Placide" and "Maclovie" (Miss), intended to soothe the disturbances of conscience and to dissipate religious scruples. The work bears in its foreword an exergue from Ecclesiastes: "Be not too just, nor more wise than is necessary, lest you become stupid." Edition: Published in Paris by J. A. Durand Dufrenoy in 1773, with the approbation and privilege of the King. Volume bound in full period calfskin, spine with raised bands ornamented with floral motifs and equipped with a dark title label. Red edges and splendid marbled endpapers with swirling motifs. Pages of text well preserved, adorned with engraved headings and decorative bands typical of 18th-century editions. Good copy.
