Antique bearded man coat rack – 4 bearded heads – elegant wirework – ca. 1910–1920 Exceptionally decorative antique wall coat rack with four characteristic bearded-man heads, rendered in dark patinated metal and mounted on a long, light-colored wooden back panel. The most striking detail is without doubt the hardware. Each coat rack hook consists of a beautifully shaped male/bearded-man head from which multiple hanging options arise: a large tall loop-shaped hook and two smaller curved hooks on the underside. This makes the coat rack not only very decorative but also surprisingly practical. The so-called beard-man or grotesque motif was widely used around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in historicist furniture and interior decoration. Similar coat racks with beard-man heads, loop-shaped metal hooks and wooden back plates are usually dated on the antique market to around 1910–1920. A nearly identical type was recently offered on Catawiki as an early-20th-century beard-man coat rack. This rendition stands out especially due to the contrast between the light wooden panel and the dark patinated metal ornaments. The large slender loops also give the coat rack an elegant, almost graphic appearance. Characteristics: * Antique wall coat rack * Probably circa 1910–1920 * Four decorative beard-man heads * Four large loop-shaped hanging hooks * Per ornament also two smaller lower hooks * Dark patinated metal * Light-colored wooden back panel * Two mounting points on the back * Historicist / grotesque ornamentation * Maker not visible or established Condition The coat rack is in a beautiful authentic used state with clear signs of use and age. The wooden panel shows discoloration, spots, scratches and local wear. The metal hardware has a lovely natural patina and light oxidation marks, appropriate to its age. The photos give a clear picture of the condition and are an integral part of the description. A distinctive and atmospheric antique coat rack that looks particularly striking in a classic hall, townhouse, country interior or eclectic decor.
