Rare Anglo-Indian Wooden Cabinet from Rajasthan (ca. 1900) – With Permanent Drawer Handles & Unique Finials Description: Beautiful, sturdy, and characterful antique four-door wooden cabinet, originating from the historic Rajasthan (India). This unique piece dates from the period of British presence in India and is a fine example of the Anglo-Indian style, where Western functionality was combined with refined local woodworking traditions from Rajasthan. The cabinet is constructed from solid wood and features its original, well-worn paint (polychromy) with rich tones of deep red, blue-green, and warm wood. Special Details & Craftsmanship: The turned wooden knobs (also called finials or vase ornaments) on the top serve both a decorative and a historical function: Decorative finish: In classical furniture making – and certainly in the Anglo-Indian style – a flat top was regarded as 'unfinished'. The knobs break the clean straight lines of the cabinet and give the piece a regal, classical appearance. Visual balance: Because the cabinet is quite tall and robust (185 cm), these upright elements at the four corners make the cabinet visually slimmer and more elegant. Indo architectural influence: These specific vase or orb shapes are frequently seen in Rajasthan’s traditional architecture, such as on the corners of roofs, gates, and inner courtyards of historic palaces (havelis). Local artisans translated this building style into their furniture. Functional Brass Hardware: The hardware on the lower drawers is designed so that the handles stay in the 180-degree (horizontal) position when lifted. This thoughtful detail provides immediate, firm grip when opening the spacious wooden drawers. Authentic Construction: The drawers and panels are made with traditional wooden mortise-and-tenon and dovetail joints. The interior offers ample practical storage space behind the double set of doors and on the sturdy wooden shelves. Thanks to its authentic patina, this piece is a striking focal point in classical, country, eclectic, or modern interiors. characteristics: Style/Origin: Anglo-Indian, Rajasthan (India) Material: Solid wood, original brass/copper hardware Dating: Ca. late 19th / early 20th century (ca. 1900) Condition: In very good and authentic condition with a beautiful aged patina, characteristic wear to the old paint layers, and light signs of use appropriate to the piece’s age. Rare Anglo-Indian Wooden Cabinet from Rajasthan (c. 1900) – Featuring 180° Locking Drawer Handles & Unique Finials Description: A magnificent, robust, and characterful antique four-door wooden cabinet originating from historic Rajasthan, India. Dating back to the period of British presence in India, this unique piece is a fine example of the Anglo-Indian style, seamlessly combining Western functionality with the refined local woodworking traditions of Rajasthan. The cabinet is crafted from solid wood and retains its original, beautifully aged painted finish (polychromy) featuring rich tones of deep red, teal blue, and warm wood. Special Details & Craftsmanship: Turned Wooden Knobs (Finials / Vase Ornaments): The raised knobs at the top serve both a decorative and historical purpose: Decorative Finish: In classical furniture making—and particularly within the Anglo-Indian style—a plain, flat top was considered 'unfinished'. These finials break the sharp straight lines and lend the cabinet a regal, classic appearance. Visual Balance: Given the cabinet's substantial height (185 cm), these upright elements at the four corners make the piece appear visually sleeker and more elegant. Architectural Influence: These specific vase and sphere shapes are widely seen in traditional Rajasthani architecture, such as on the corners of rooftops, gates, and inner courtyards of historic palaces (havelis). Local artisans directly translated these architectural elements into their furniture design. Functional Brass Hardware: The hardware on the bottom drawers is engineered so that when lifted, the handles stay locked at 180 degrees (horizontally). This thoughtful detail provides an immediate, firm grip when pulling open the spacious wooden drawers. Authentic Joinery: The drawers and panels are constructed using traditional wooden mortise-and-tenon and dovetail joints. The interior offers ample practical storage space behind the double set of doors and on sturdy wooden shelves. Thanks to its authentic patina, this piece makes an impressive statement in classical, rustic, eclectic, or modern interiors alike.
