Antique meerschaum pipe in a matching case – amber-colored mouthpiece – late 19th century Elegance in a restrained form. This fine meerschaum pipe draws attention with its softly rounded bowl, cream-colored surface and long, marbled mouthpiece in warm honey- and amber-tones. The matching, pipe-shaped case completes the presentation. The unadorned rendition lets the materials speak for themselves. The light bowl contrasts beautifully with the translucent-looking mouthpiece, in which cloudy color gradations are visible. Around the transition to the stem, the meerschaum has acquired a warmer golden-yellow tint. Meerschaum: beloved for its distinctive character Meerschaum, also known as sep oiolite, is a light, porous mineral raw material traditionally used for pipes. A characteristic property is the gradual coloration through use: from white to ivory-yellow and eventually deeper brown tones. This way, every used pipe develops its own look. This piece fits the European pipe culture of the late nineteenth century and is presumed dated around 1880–1900. The pipe is supplied in a matching hinged case with black exterior and a cream-colored, softly lined interior. Along the edge there is an inscription that appears to read ‘Echt Naturmeerschaum’, German for real natural meerschaum. No maker has been established.
