American quilts served practical domestic purposes while also providing makers with an important medium for artistic expression. Variations in printed fabric, color, and hand stitching preserve evidence of individual choices and the period in which the quilt was created. Its manageable size makes it particularly suitable for wall display, where its construction and design can be appreciated as textile art.
