Antique Book-Shaped Locket in Onyx and Rolled Gold, c. 1885

The design of the present locket made of rolled gold on tombac has a special wit: it is worked in the form of a photo album, suitably with a decoratively embellished cover. The book is particularly detailed. The front cover features fine engravings and a curved coat of arms in the center with a slanted disc made of polished onyx. A deep black onyx also forms the back of the locket. This album allows you to keep your family and loved ones close to your heart, as photos can be inserted inside. Inside the locket, two photographs of loved ones can be stored safely and away from prying eyes behind small frames. The small album can be worn as a pendant. It is a wonderful, portable example of the distinctive culture of sentimentality in the 19th century. Its design and execution suggest that it was created in Germany, originally as a pendant for a gentleman's watch chain.
