The Bohemian garnet enjoyed a true heyday in the 19th century. The style of garnet jewelry that we most commonly associate with this stone today—stars and flowers composed of countless garnets set close together—developed during this period. Later, the aesthetic of closely set garnets was retained, but the designs adapted to the fashion trends of the time. This brooch features a remarkably simple design: it is round in shape and slightly domed like a shield. Its surface, however, is richly set with a dense pavé of garnets. The numerous dark-red garnets are cut into round and teardrop-shaped roses and glow an intense red in the light. The larger stones form a central bloom, framed by larger groups of three. The pyrope garnets are set in gold-plated tombac. Created around 1880, this piece is a typical example of late 19th-century garnet jewelry. This beautiful brooch came to us from Nuremberg.
