Antique Brooch With "Naval Crown" in Pearls & Gold, Great Britain ca. 1910

Antique Brooch With "Naval Crown" in Pearls & Gold, Great Britain ca. 1910

A noble coronet made of gold and shimmering pearls decorates the present brooch from the first years of the 20th century. It is a so-called "Naval Crown", which is a special feature of English coats of arms. These naval crowns are made of inflated sails on the mast and the prows of a ship. In English coats of arms, the Naval Crown often takes over the heraldic function of the mural crown of city coats of arms, which is widespread in Germany, and shows the maritime connection of a respective city. Perhaps our brooch was once the jewellery of a resident of an English coastal town? In any case, the piece of jewellery is to be understood as a profound expression of deep attachment to the sea. The crown is set on an oval base of mother-of-pearl held by a navy blue enameled framing of gold. Typically British in this piece of jewellery is the fineness of 15 carats, which was used only until 1932. We date the brooch to the reign of Edward VII. To us it found in London.
