Antique Coral Necklace in Two Rows, c. 1900

Coral jewellery has a centuries-old tradition. Already in ancient Rome, people adorned themselves with intricately carved pieces made from deep red Mediterranean coral, which could be harvested in abundance off the coast at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. It is no wonder that here, in the bay at the foot of Vesuvius, a specialised craftsmanship tradition developed, with its masters transforming this treasure of the sea into artistic creations to this day. The present two-strand necklace is a piece of jewellery in a beautiful, rich salmon pink. It was most likely created in Italy around 1900 and presents its corals arranged according to size. A simple, original gold clasp on tombac secures the necklace. It is set with another coral in button shape, allowing the clasp to blend seamlessly into the sea of corals. We have had the necklace restrung so that the piece can be worn carefreely even after more than 120 years.
