Antique Cross Made of Mediterranean Coral & Gold, c. 1880

In the 19th century, faith played a far greater role than it does today. Religious symbols were also widespread in the world of jewellery. Crosses, in particular, are among the most popular pieces of jewellery in the Christian cultural sphere. Throughout the centuries, they have served as both symbols of faith and fashion accessories, offering a way to distinguish oneself through their shape and design. This piece of jewellery from the final decades of the 19th century also falls into this category. Mounted on a delicate gold chain, it features a beautiful cross pendant. The arms of the Latin cross are made of salmon-coloured Mediterranean coral, known as Corallo Sciacca. At their intersection, they are connected by yellow gold sleeves, from which the eyelet is also crafted. A flattened coral bead adorns this area. Created around 1880, this piece of jewellery offers twofold protection: first, as a Christian symbol, and second, through the coral used in its construction, which is still worn in Italy today as a talisman against evil.
