All auctions / Jewellery & Gems / Antique Edwardian Amethyst and Pearl Pendant, British, c. 1905

Pastel colors dominated fashion in the first decade of the young 20th century. Fashion houses such as the House of Worth designed dresses in pastel colors, embroidered with floral ornaments and accented with delicate tulle panels. The lines were flowing and soft, the colors all borrowed from a decidedly delicate spectrum. During the day, people preferred to wear gemstones in the same colors with this fashion: lilac amethysts, light green peridots, shimmering opals and aquamarines. One such stone shines at the center of this pendant: a round star-cut amethyst. It has a wonderful lilac color. A double frame of delicate gold arches accompanies the amethyst like petals. Small pearls are set close together on the gold and add a velvety shimmer. This creates a magnificent, yet light and airy impression, in keeping with the fashion of the time. The pendant is made of 15-karat gold, an alloy that was only used in Great Britain until 1932. We have added a fine gold chain to it.
