Antique Gold Earrings in Archaeological Style, Circa 1880 & later

The magnificent design language of these earrings transports us to the lost world of the Etruscans. The people, who have remained a mystery to this day, lived on the Italian peninsula and had a lasting influence on Roman civilization. In the 19th century, the arts of the Etruscans were rediscovered by Italian artisans. Their admirable craftsmanship became known beyond the country's borders and the citizens of almost all European countries became enthusiastic about these new discoveries. The exciting forms seen for the first time quickly became established. The earrings presented here also speak this design language. An ornamented element, decorated with cord soldering and fine gold wires, hangs below a simple ear hoop with an attached ball. Polished elements and small spheres are inserted into it. The interplay of ornament and movement is immediately reminiscent of antique pieces of jewellery and gives the earrings their special vibrancy. They were probably created in recent decades from an antique brooch and individual original parts as a so-called mariage. The two richly decorated upper parts were originally connected at the lower end and framed a now lost central element as a brooch. A skilled goldsmith later separated them from each other, supplemented them with gold set pieces and created a pair of earrings from them. The result is a harmonious design in the taste of the late 19th century, inspired by antiquity, crafted in a sophisticated manner and full of historical echoes. We discovered the earrings as they are in the south of England.
