Info : Karabakh-Azeri antique carpets originate from the Karabakh region in Azerbaijan and are among the most important Caucasian carpets. They are known for vibrant natural colors (deep red, blue, ivory), large medallions, floral motifs, and geometric borders. These carpets are hand-knotted from high-quality sheep’s wool (symmetric knot) and often display stylized rose or animal motifs. Antique Karabakh carpets are today highly sought-after collectibles, impressively uniting traditional craftsmanship and Azerbaijani culture. Features of a Shirvan carpet: Pattern: Shirvan carpets are characterized by intricate, symmetrical patterns with medallions, stylized flowers, lozenges, and abstract animal motifs. Colors: Commonly used colors include red, blue, green, ivory, and yellow, often derived from natural plant and mineral dyes. Material: These carpets typically consist of hand-spun wool on a cotton or wool warp, giving them a fine, durable texture. Border: The borders are usually richly decorated with Caucasian symbols, including hook motifs (protective symbols), wavy lines (water marks), and rosettes. Meaning & Rarity Ancient Shirvan carpets are very sought after today, as they belong to the finest Caucasian carpets. They were made in small villages, often with individual patterns, which makes every carpet unique. Especially valuable are well-preserved pieces with clear patterns and strong natural colors. This uploaded image shows a classic Shirvan carpet with a typical red field, central medallions, and geometric ornaments. The distinctive edge patterns and fine details indicate a handcrafted one-of-a-kind piece.
