Antique Native American Trade Pipe Tomahawk, Square-Tipped Blade, Ringed Bowl

Antique Native American Trade Pipe Tomahawk, Square-Tipped Blade, Ringed Bowl

North America, likely Native American trade context, ca. 18th–19th century CE. A pipe tomahawk, a hatchet and a smoking pipe combined in a single forged head of iron or steel. Opposite the flared, square-tipped blade rises a cylindrical pipe bowl with a turned collar at the rim and a ringed neck. Angled facets ease the bowl into the eye and give the head a clean, faceted profile. The wooden haft is wedged at the top and drilled through its full length to serve as a pipestem, narrowing at the end to a tapered mouthpiece so smoke could be drawn from the bowl through the handle. Pipe tomahawks served as tools, sometimes as weapons, and often as ceremonial pipes in councils and diplomacy. The pipe tomahawk is one of the most recognizable hybrids of the North American contact period. Iron trade axes reached Indigenous communities through European and colonial trade networks. Combining the axe with the smoking pipe joined two very different ideas: the hatchet as tool and weapon, and the pipe as the vehicle of prayer, council, and treaty. By the late 18th and 19th centuries, pipe tomahawks were made for the trade, presented as diplomatic gifts, and carried as marks of status. Many were never meant to see hard use. Who first joined the two forms is still an open question. In their Penn Museum study "Investigating a Pipe Tomahawk," Margaret Bruchac and Kayla Holmes describe two possible origin stories. In the first, blacksmiths in Europe or America saw the advantage of combining the objects as a clever gadget and a new tool for negotiation. In the second, a Native man trained in metalworking, perhaps apprenticed to a Euro-American smith, made the first example to express an Indigenous idea: an offering of peace that could turn fierce if betrayed. As the authors put it, the object signaled "Peace or War - Your Choice." Making the head in one piece, rather than brazing a separate bowl onto an axe, took skill at the forge. A smith had to shape the bowl, eye, and blade from a single bar, and the faceted shoulders here show that work. The drilled haft completes the pipe. Boring a clean channel through a long wooden shaft took patience, and a working pierced haft is part of what separates a functional pipe tomahawk from a decorative imitation. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205951
