All auctions / Jewellery & Gems / Antique Pendant-Brooch with Seed Pearls in Gold, British, c. 1900

We discovered this piece of jewellery on our last trip to London. And indeed, it looks exactly as you would imagine an English piece from the heyday of jewellery production: in a fine, playful form, with white seed pearls in radiant gold. The date and origin of the piece is confirmed not least by the gold stamp: 15-karat gold was only used in Great Britain until 1932. Additional fine gold plating over the reddish gold gives it the radiant, warm yellow gold tone that was so popular at the turn of the century. This small piece of jewellery can be worn both as a brooch and as a pendant. The last image we show is a page from a contemporary catalog that illustrates the abundance of similar pendants in turn-of-the-century Britain. Illustration from the catalog of Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd, 112 Regent Street, London, 1901, illustrated in Peter Hinks (ed.): Viktorianischer Schmuck, Hildesheim/Zurich/New York 1996, p. 21.
